Thrales End Farm & Business Centre

FARMING & BIODIVERSITY

We have always been farmers.  For more than seven hundred years we have farmed land in the UK. From 1907, when we arrived at Thrales End, we have grown wheat, barley, oats, pigs, cattle, chickens, sheep, strawberries, pumpkins even lavender. Always seeking new crops for new markets to sustain profitability.

Since 1990 we have placed particular emphasis on improving the biodiversity of our farms. This means creating an environment where a greater number of species can thrive. Today over 30% of our land is devoted specifically to habitats.

Our landscape is a rich tapestry of hedges, woodland, arable land, wild field corners, water meadows, bluebells and chalk stream.  Without careful management these can be overcome by dominant species.  We treasure the River Ver, our chalk stream, our birds, butterflies and mammals.  We work closely with the Ver Valley Society, Affinity Water, LEAF, Groundswell and Rothamsted Research to continually improve our knowledge and our homes for nature.
